Healthy gums that properly protect your teeth are essential for oral health, so it is vital to correct gum recession when it has occurred. Gum recession exposes the roots of your teeth. This not only causes sensitivity, it also leaves the roots vulnerable to decay, damage and infection. A receding gumline can also make you look older and mar the beauty of your smile.
Traditional gum recession treatment involves removing a piece of tissue from the roof of the mouth, and grafting that tissue onto the area of recession. The graft is sutured into place and allowed to heal. This can take several weeks.
In certain cases, Dr. Levine is able to use a breakthrough, minimally invasive gum recession treatment known as the Chao® Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST). With the PST, receding gums can be effectively corrected without the cutting, grafting and suturing that are elements of traditional gum recession treatment. Dr. Levine is part of a small group of dental practitioners in the United States currently trained and certified to deliver this procedure.
A faster and more comfortable procedure
The Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique is fast and efficient, and the doctor can treat up to 14 teeth at one time. Treatment is performed using only a local anesthetic, and the entire procedure can be completed in a couple of hours. Since no incisions, grafts or sutures are used, there is little to no discomfort and healing is rapid. In fact, most patients are able to resume their normal activities by the next day.
The Pinhole Surgical Technique was developed in 2006 by Dr. John Chao to provide his patients with an effective gum recession treatment that was gentler on the tissues and faster healing than traditional gum grafting. It has been widely tested since it was first introduced and has been shown to produce uniformly stable and long-lasting results.

How the Pinhole Surgical Technique Works
Before starting treatment, Dr. Levine cleans and prepares the teeth in the affected area, after which the gums are numbed with a local anesthetic. He then makes an entry point about the size of a pinhole in the gum tissue above the affected teeth. He places a special dental instrument through this pinhole and gently separates the inner and outer layers of gum tissue. This allows the outer layer to be moved and repositioned.
Dr. Levine then guides the gum tissue over the tooth roots and restores a healthy and natural-looking gumline. He inserts collagen strips to stabilize the gums in their new position and to promote healing. Since only a tiny pinhole was made for the entire procedure, no sutures are required and full healing usually occurs within 24 hours.
