Healthy gums shield your teeth from bacteria, erosive substances, wear and injury. When gums recede from their natural position, your tooth roots are exposed and unprotected. Receding gums make your teeth look longer than normal, which can age your appearance. Thus, gum recession can be both an oral health problem and a cosmetic issue.
As a periodontist, Dr. Levine specializes in treating the gums, bone and other tissues surrounding the teeth. He has over 40 years’ experience using gum grafting techniques to effectively correct gum recession. He has taught gum grafting and other periodontal procedures at three Florida universities.Dr. Levine uses advanced laser technology and minimally invasive procedures to make your gum recession treatment comfortable and fast-healing. He is one of the few practitioners in the United States who delivers the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique for Receding Gums, a breakthrough procedure that restores the natural gumline around your teeth without the need for grafting.

What Causes Gum Recession?
Below are the most common causes of gum recession:
- Severe gum disease
- Inadequate dental hygiene
- Overly aggressive brushing or flossing
- Teeth grinding or clenching
- Tooth injury or trauma
- Crooked teeth or a misaligned bite
- Genetics which cause naturally thin gums
- Tobacco products
- Prior orthodontic treatment
The importance of treating receded gums
Tooth roots are softer than the crowns of the teeth, which are covered with hard enamel. Unprotected, they are more prone to erosion and more sensitive to heat, cold and sweets. They can be damaged by food acids, aggressive brushing and bacteria. Teeth with exposed roots can eventually wear down to the point that they fracture or become loose. Correcting gum recession is therefore very important for the preservation of your oral health.

High-tech, minimally invasive gum grafting treatment
The pinhole technique offers an excellent solution for many patients. However, in certain cases a traditional gum graft may be required. For those cases, Dr. Levine provides gum grafting that is as comfortable and minimally invasive as possible. He uses special gum tissue, which works equally as well as your own gum tissue. This avoids the need for surgical incisions to remove graft tissue from your mouth.
Dr. Levine uses a dental laser whenever possible for incisions. The laser beam affects only the gum tissue and leaves all other tissues intact. Use of the laser makes the treatment gentler and more comfortable than when traditional instruments are used.
Low-level laser therapy for accelerated healing
As an additional aid to swift healing, Dr. Levine uses a special dental laser to perform low-level laser therapy on your tissues at the end of the procedure. The laser energy stimulates healing while reducing swelling and postoperative discomfort.
Your comfort is important to us
Your comfort is a top priority and we do our best to make sure your treatment is pleasant and gentle. Dr. Levine will go over the procedure in advance and answer all your questions, so you can relax and feel at ease about your treatment.
The DentalVibe® device makes it possible for Dr. Levine to give comfortable, virtually painless injections. We provide a choice of music or soothing sounds to help relax you, and we offer blankets, pillows and massage pads for added comfort in the treatment chair.
