Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes, sedation dentistry is very safe when administered by trained professionals. We monitor your vital signs throughout the procedure and have emergency protocols in place. We’ll review your medical history to ensure sedation is appropriate for you.

Most sedation options keep you conscious but deeply relaxed. You’ll be able to respond to instructions but may have little memory of the procedure. Only general anesthesia renders you completely unconscious.

Nitrous oxide wears off within minutes. Oral sedation effects can last several hours. IV sedation effects typically last 2-6 hours. You’ll need someone to drive you home after oral or IV sedation.

Sedation is ideal for patients with dental anxiety, fear of needles, sensitive gag reflex, difficulty getting numb, or those needing extensive treatment. We’ll evaluate your health and anxiety level to recommend the best option.

Instructions vary by sedation type. For nitrous oxide, you can eat normally. For oral and IV sedation, we may ask you to avoid food for several hours beforehand. We’ll provide specific pre-treatment instructions.

You may feel drowsy or groggy for several hours. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or making important decisions for the rest of the day. Have someone available to drive you home and stay with you if needed.
